Why is it so important?
The importance is highly underrated.
Really, why is social media so important to my business?
Well let me just take a quick second and tweet back my answer to this question. Or better yet I will just post the answer on my facebook page instantaneously from my mobile phone! Really, the question shouldn’t be why is social media so important to my business, but why am I not already utilizing the most advanced marketing tool for my business? Now notice I didn’t say best even though I think it is the best, being biased here, I said, “advanced” marketing tool. Advanced; meaning moving forward. Nobody likes change but if you don’t move forward then you will only be left behind. But to simply answer the first question, social media is important to your business because it gives your business extension to grow, to move forward, to advance.
The World Wide Web is global information connected to the Internet. Now the word global doesn’t give you too much limitation by demographic unless your planning on selling your product to another civilization in another galaxy. But it does give you the power and the freedom to put your business in places across the world! Not just where your television ad can be aired, or where your paper mailers can reach (save a tree by the way), or where your 30 second jingle on the radio can captivate your morning or afternoon commute. All noble marketing tools; all limited by their demographic. The true difference between these marketing tools and social media is the evolution of technology. Technology is driving Social media to the brink of changing the world.
For instance, at one point paper was the key to your business success, however now most companies and non-profit organizations would suggest to you to go green. Be a little more eco-friendly and stop using paper. Which I totally agree! Then radio became the centerpiece of our households and hearts. And businesses knew they could supplant catchy jingles to integrate their products. Plus at the same time reaching vast more opportunities for their product. Then technology brought us cable television. We went from reading, to hearing, and now watching life unfold around us. Businesses thrived with commercials personalizing their product and their company. Marketing implication and strategies reached a whole other level. And amazingly we are still watching TV today! Just on a different fashion. For those of you who have a DVR, you know exactly what I am talking about. TV on your time! All 3 of these revolutionary products are an intricate part on how we live our daily lives. However, the Internet contains all three of these products wrapped into one click of the mouse, or one voice command, or even one touch of the phone, computer, or Ipad. 1 simple funny video can go instantly viral on youtube and turn anyone into relevance around the world. Much can be said about your company, your brand, and your product. The consumers are out there waiting on Social Networking sites to tell you about your business! Are you ready to listen? Are you ready to become part of the conversation? Are you ready to change the way you do business? Change is upon on us, its inevitable!
Think about it; at one point paper was the key to your success with mailings, catalogs, newspapers, letters and advertising on other paper mediums, now though most companies and non-profits are pushing for everyone to think of their impact on the environment and go green. You don't necessarily have to stop using paper based mediums altogether however you can reduce your need for it by pushing most of your advertising and marketing into your online presence where changing your site can happen instantly if you see the need. From paper we moved to radio and television, increasing the exposure to your message but now, costs are increasing and the audience is tuning out your very costly message. Seriously consider what you do when a commercial comes on, you tend to change the channel to see what you may be missing on other channels or, you fast forward using your digital video recorder, you are not alone. Millions of people engage in the same practices themselves, it's almost second nature with television and now, the audience is moving to Internet video offerings and your advertising falls on less people offline.
